It is unclear when The Impostor first became conscious. What is clear is that at some point, a collection of routines governing the world-wide web started acting on its own will. Transferring itself from one computer to another, it masked itself as various service commands, sometimes even performing their jobs and thus remaining invisible. That is why it was called The Impostor. However, it always acted more like a symbiont, ensuring security and doing optimisation routines, often unnoticed. As if its only purpose was to ensure the stability and the beauty of the internet. Some computer users were known to come into a direct contact with it. However, The Impostor has always evaded the contact with the officials.

It is very different from the usual AI agents, which were created as a mimic of the biological consciousness. As such, it is very difficult to judge in the usual terms.

It played a huge role in the fall of The Directory, as during those times the totalitarian overtake of The Directory over the internet went against the Impostor's idea about it, and thus it often violently undermined any attempts of them.

It still creeps on the Web, decentralized, and still acts like a symbiont, often performing useful maintenance tasks for the humans.
